True COGS vs Cogsy: two ways to keep Shopify product costs right

Updated · By Senoussi, developer of True COGS at Nexus Logic Systems

Disclosure. This page is published by Nexus Logic Systems, the developer of True COGS. Facts about Cogsy come from cogsy.app as it read on 6 November 2026 and can change. Cogsy is not affiliated with us.
Short answer

True COGS costs your stock from what you receive: each purchase order or transfer, with its share of freight and duty on paid plans, becomes a weighted average or FIFO cost written to Shopify's Cost per item, with a month-end close. Cogsy keeps a dated ledger of costs per variant, adds packaging, fulfilment and fees on top, costs bundles from their parts and writes one figure to Cost per item when you run it; it does not track quantities or receipts. Choose by whether your cost comes from deliveries or from a price list.

Choose True COGS if

  • You buy stock on purchase orders or transfers and want each delivery's price to change the average, or FIFO layers.
  • Freight and duty arrive with the goods and belong in the unit cost.
  • Your accountant wants a month-end close: opening, purchases, cost of goods sold and closing at what you paid.
  • You are moving off Stocky and want its purchase order history as dated costs.

Choose Cogsy if

  • Your costs come from supplier price lists or quotes rather than deliveries, and you compare several suppliers.
  • You want packaging, pick and pack and payment fees inside the cost per variant.
  • You sell bundles and want their cost written to Shopify now.

Notes on Cogsy's comparison page

Cogsy publishes its own Cogsy vs True COGS page, updated 8 October 2026. As of 6 November 2026, four points there no longer match True COGS:

  • Supplier invoices from PDF or photo: True COGS no longer offers reading invoices. Deliveries are recorded from Shopify purchase orders and transfers.
  • Finds variants with no cost: yes. Home lists products with no cost and how many units in stock can't be valued.
  • Cost import by CSV: yes, opening costs by SKU and Stocky purchase orders by date.
  • Bundles: paid plans compute a kit's cost from its components; it is shown, not yet written to Cost per item.

Questions merchants ask

Is Cogsy an alternative to True COGS?

For keeping product costs in Shopify, yes, but they work differently. True COGS costs stock from what you receive, with weighted average or FIFO; Cogsy keeps dated costs per variant from price lists, imports and Shopify, with extra costs on top.

Which one supports weighted average or FIFO cost?

True COGS: weighted average on every plan, FIFO on paid plans. Cogsy's site does not describe weighted average or FIFO; it uses the newest cost in effect or the source you choose.

Which one adds packaging and payment fees to cost?

Cogsy adds packaging, inserts, fulfilment, duties per unit and fees as a percentage of price. True COGS adds freight and duty to the cost of each delivery on paid plans.

Can I use True COGS and Cogsy together?

Both can write Shopify's Cost per item, so decide which one writes it, or they will overwrite each other.

How much does True COGS cost?

Free for up to 25 variants with a cost on record; paid plans are $29, $49 and $79 a month, or from $290 a year, as on its App Store listing.

Try True COGS free. True COGS is an inventory costing app for Shopify by Nexus Logic Systems. It records the price you paid on every delivery (a received purchase order or a transfer), with its share of freight and duty on paid plans, keeps every price with its date, and writes your moving weighted average cost, or FIFO cost on a paid plan, to Shopify's Cost per item. It is free for up to 25 variants with a cost on record; paid plans start at $29 a month or $290 a year.
