Shopify cost history: what a product cost on a past date
Shopify does not keep a history of Cost per item. Each variant has one current value; when it changes, the old one is gone from the product. What survives is the cost copied onto each order when it was created, so profit reports by order or product show what each sale was costed at. To know what a product cost on a past date, or what your stock was worth then, you need a dated record of every price you paid, kept from now on.
What Shopify keeps
| Record | Holds a past cost? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Product Cost per item | No | A single static field per variant |
| Orders | Yes, per sale | The cost is recorded on the order when it is created |
| Purchase orders and transfers | Prices agreed and cost adjustments | Not linked to Cost per item |
| Month-end inventory value report | A Cost column per variant | Cost per item × ending On hand quantity |
“The cost per item is recorded on an order when the order is created. If you change a product's cost per item, then the new cost isn't applied to orders that were created before the change.” Shopify Help, Adding cost per item to products
Finding a past cost today
- From sales: profit reports show the cost recorded on orders, so the cost of a product on the day it sold is there, if it sold that day.
- From purchasing: your purchase orders, transfers and supplier invoices show what each delivery cost. Rebuild the average yourself with the weighted average calculator.
- From a saved report: a Month-end inventory value export you saved at the time shows each variant's cost then. Save one at every month end from now on.
A dated cost record
| Date | Event | Units | Price paid | Units on hand | Average after |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 Mar | Delivery | 120 | $4.00 | 120 | $4.00 |
| Mar–May | Sales | 70 | 50 | $4.00 | |
| 12 Jun | Delivery | 150 | $4.60 | 200 | $4.45 |
| June | Sales | 100 | 100 | $4.45 | |
| 9 Sep | Delivery | 100 | $4.95 | 200 | $4.70 |
Shopify's product shows $4.70 today. The record shows that on 30 June the 100 units on hand were worth 100 × $4.45 = $445.00, and today the 200 units are worth $940.00. Only the dated record can answer “what was it worth then?”, which is the question year-end and month-end close ask.
Keeping history from now on
True COGS keeps every price you paid, with its date and the average it produced, on every plan:
- History (under Costs): each delivery, its price, the average after it, and a cost chart per product. A correction is added beside the original entry, never over it.
- Inventory value (under Reports): Shopify's on-hand count valued at the cost you recorded, today or on a past date since you installed.
- Export for my accountant (paid plans): one CSV with every entry in a period.
- History starts when you install. Purchase orders exported from Stocky can be imported with their own dates.
- The record is erased 48 hours after the app is uninstalled, so keep the exports your accountant needs.

Questions merchants ask
Does Shopify keep a history of product costs?
No. Each variant has one Cost per item value. When it changes, the product keeps only the new value. Orders keep the cost they were created with.
How can I see what a product cost last year in Shopify?
Look at the cost recorded on orders in profit reports, at your purchase orders and supplier invoices, or at a Month-end inventory value export saved at the time.
Can I get my inventory value on a past date?
Only from a report saved then, or from a dated cost record. True COGS shows inventory value on a past date since the day it was installed.
Do past orders change when I change a cost?
No. Shopify records the cost on an order when it is created, so past orders keep their cost.
Where does True COGS keep cost history?
On the History page, with each delivery's price, date and the average it produced. Corrections are added beside the original entry.
Can I import old cost history?
True COGS imports purchase orders exported from Stocky, each on its own date. Opening costs from another system can be imported from a CSV.
Try True COGS free. True COGS is an inventory costing app for Shopify by Nexus Logic Systems. It records the price you paid on every delivery (a received purchase order or a transfer), with its share of freight and duty on paid plans, keeps every price with its date, and writes your moving weighted average cost, or FIFO cost on a paid plan, to Shopify's Cost per item. It is free for up to 25 variants with a cost on record; paid plans start at $29 a month or $290 a year.
