Shopify's inventory value report is missing products: seven reasons

Updated · By Senoussi, developer of True COGS at Nexus Logic Systems

Short answer

Shopify's Month-end inventory value report shows only variants that are tracked, have a Cost per item, and were adjusted or ordered in the last three years. A variant with no cost, with tracking off, or untouched for three years is left out, and one with zero or negative stock adds nothing. Check those three settings first; then check the date (the report counts On hand from 1 October 2026), deleted locations, and deleted products.

What the report includes

Shopify Help describes the Month-end inventory value report as Cost per item multiplied by the ending On hand quantity for each variant, for variants that have been adjusted or ordered in the last three years. The report's own query, read in a store's admin, filters on inventory_cost_is_recorded = true and inventory_is_tracked = true.

Seven reasons a product is missing

Causes, from Shopify Help and the ShopifyQL inventory schema, read 28 October and 4 November 2026.

A change, not a missing product: from 1 October 2026 the report counts On hand units (available, committed and unavailable) instead of Available. Totals for October onwards can be higher than September's for the same stock. See On hand vs Available.

How to check your store

  1. Open Analytics > Reports, filter the category to Inventory, and open Month-end inventory value for the month.
  2. Note a product you expected. Open it: is Track quantity on? Does every variant have a Cost per item?
  3. Check when it last had an adjustment or an order. Stock untouched for three years is outside the report.
  4. Compare the count with the location's On hand quantity, including committed and unavailable units.

Fixing it

  • Fill missing costs with what you paid, not a guess. A cost entered today applies to new orders only; past orders keep theirs.
  • Turn tracking off only for products that are not stock; see leaving non-stock products out.
  • Save each month's export, so the figures you sent your accountant can be found again.
  • True COGS's Inventory value page values Shopify's on-hand count for every variant at the cost you recorded, lists products with no cost on Missing costs, and leaves out products tagged as not stock. It can differ from Shopify's report, which uses Shopify's cost field.

Questions merchants ask

Why is a product missing from Shopify's inventory value report?

Usually because it has no Cost per item, tracking is off, or it has not been adjusted or ordered in the last three years. The report includes only tracked variants with a recorded cost in that window.

Why does my Month-end inventory value report show nothing?

Check the period: inventory history starts on 1 October 2023. Then check that your variants are tracked and have a Cost per item.

Does the report include products with negative stock?

A negative or zero ending quantity adds nothing to the value, even when the variant is listed.

Why did my inventory value jump in October 2026?

From 1 October 2026 Shopify's inventory reports count On hand units, including committed and unavailable units, instead of Available units.

Does the report value stock at what I paid?

It multiplies Shopify's Cost per item by the ending quantity, so it is right only when Cost per item matches what you paid.

Are deleted locations included?

No. Historical inventory shows only for active locations.
